Teerenpeli now distills Finland’s most popular single malt for Swiss maltheads!
The Finnish city of Lahti, 100 kilometers north of the capital Helsinki, is not only the venue for the World Ski Championships, but also home to Finland's first and largest whisky distillery . Teerenpeli is a family business that began its rich career in 1995 by brewing lingonberry beer. In 2002, the Finnish pioneers began distilling their mild single malt , which is so popular that Teerenpeli currently produces up to 160,000 liters of alcohol a year with its two pot stills hand-made in Scotland. An astonishing amount for the sparsely populated Scandinavian country, where the sale and advertising of alcoholic beverages are subject to numerous legal restrictions.
The production volume of Teerenpeli is also based on the international success of the distillers. The soft, sweet, partly floral whiskies from Finland have already attracted attention at numerous competitions. This is also the case with the latest bottling: the KULO Single Malt . The 7-year-old whisky received 98 points. at this year's IWSC - and thus, in addition to gold, the award "outstanding". KULO is based on the distillery's slightly peaty new make and matured in ex-Oloroso and ex-Pedro-Ximénez sherry casks. Accordingly, the single malt is intensely fruity with notes of raisins, figs and plums, a hint of peat smoke and a light liquorice spice.
Unadulteratedly Finnish and natural , Teerenpelis whiskies are made from local raw materials. Barley from the region, malt from local malthouses and the fresh, lime-rich Salpausselkä groundwater always give the single malts a distinctive Finnish note. The Finns operate the traditional copper stills using renewable energy . They fill their distillates into a wide selection of barrels of various sizes pre-filled with sherry, bourbon, port wine or rum .
The Teerenpeli whisky range in the modern, Scandinavian-reduced bottle and packaging design includes Finland's first 10-year-old single malt . The golden yellow, award-winning bottling matured in a combination of 85 percent bourbon and 15 percent sherry casks before being bottled in 2015 at 43% ABV. The most highly decorated single malt from Finland, KASKI , matures in selected sherry casks, while PORTTI rests for three to four years in small, 140-liter ex-bourbon casks before the whisky is given a 1.5-year finish in port wine casks. With SAVU, Terenpeeli is expanding its portfolio to include a bottling based on peated malt, which matures 80 percent in bourbon and 20 percent in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks.
