It was built in 1891 on the site of a grain mill built in 1823. At that time, however, the distillery was still called Glenisla-Glenlivet. It only received its current name in 1895, when the company W. and A. Gilbey bought it. The distillery has experienced numerous changes of ownership over the course of its history and is now owned by Diageo. The distillery works with two wash stills and two spirit stills and has an annual capacity of around two million litres. Most of the Strathmill production is used for blended whisky - for example the J&B. It was not until 1993 that the distillery began selling its own single malt whisky.
