The distillery was built in 1898 by John Duff, but closed again in 1900. It was not until 1965 that it was reopened by Glenlivet Distillers Ltd. In 1978 it was taken over by Seagram and in 1985 it was expanded from two to four stills. From 1983 to 1996 a peaty whisky was also produced, which was intended for blends, but is now also available as a single malt. In 1999 the malthouse was closed after over 100 years of continuous production and the malt was then purchased. On December 19, 2001 the distillery was taken over by Pernod Ricard, who initially reduced production and only operated the distillery for 3 months a year, until they closed it down completely in August 2002. In April 2004 a consortium consisting of Billy Walker, Geoff Bell and Wayne Keiswetter bought the distillery, which has been running normally again since then. Glendronach has been part of Benriach Distillery Co. Ltd. since 2008 and Glenglassaugh since 2013. In 2016, Benriach Distillery Co. Ltd. was acquired by the US group Brown-Forman for 285 million pounds sterling. The distillery has a mash tun with a capacity of 6.1 t, eight fermentation vats with a total capacity of 240,000 l, two wash stills and two spirit stills that are heated with steam. In 2014, the first whisky distilled under Billy Walker (The BenRiach 10th Anniversary) was released and in 2015 the first standard bottling was made with the BenRiach 10 years old single malt. Since 2015, the disused malt kilns have been put back into operation for a few days a year.
