Tasting Notes

Nose: Initially, lemons and grilled sausages flow from the glass. Then, notes of espresso and light licorice complement aromas of syrup and semi-sweet dark chocolate. Sultanas and warm dates develop along with rich, dark coal smoke.

Palate: Rich campfire smoke and toffee interplay with bitter lemon and tangerine peel. Ginger spice joins aromas of dark chocolate and star anise. Peat develops with a classic medicinal Islay note, while hints of cherry and dried raspberry unfold.

Finish: Cocoa nibs and coal smoke linger on the palate, while lemon oil and raspberry leaf tea create a pleasant dryness.

Port Askaig Cask Strength with new batch

Port Askaig is the gateway to Islay. And a synonym for great whisky. With smoky notes, salty overtones, and a hint of seaweed, the eponymous brand captures the typical character of the island and its iconic whiskies. The independent bottlings from Elixir Distillers are true "mystery malts": The Islay distilleries from which these peaty whiskies originate remain a secret.

Like the 100 Proof of old, the Port Askaig Cask Strength from the Core Range boasts untamed Islay flavors. This annually released small batch is bottled at cask strength from no more than 60 casks from a distillery on Islay's northeast coast. Port Askaig keeps the cask composition transparent via a code.

Batch #02-2024 combines 62 percent sherry casks with refill butts and hogheads, as well as a small proportion of bourbon barrels, to create complex layers of dark sweetness, tangy fruit and warm spice that blend with rich Islay smoke.
