Ondjaba The Namibian Whiskey - Classic
Volume: 0.7 liters | Alcohol content: 46% | Non-chill-filtered | No coloring
Description
Not a copy of Scottish or Irish whiskeys, but rather a creation of something entirely unique from the native ingredients of their adopted homeland: Wolfgang and Esther Koll have succeeded in doing just that. The German couple runs the Erongo Mountain Winery in Namibia – and produces the first whisky in the African coastal state at 1,226 meters above sea level.
Ondjaba is the name of Namibia's first whisky. Or "elephant" in the language of the Ovambo, Namibia's largest ethnic group. This elephant makes this smoky whisky unique worldwide. The grain for Ondjaba is smoked over elephant dung, which imbues it with a sweet, cigar-like aroma. Also typical of Namibia: Mahangu. This type of millet has been cultivated by the local population for thousands of years and is a main ingredient in Ondjaba.
Two bottlings from the (liqueur) wine casks of the Erongo Mountain Winery are part of the natural range. The Ondjaba Classic Namibian Triple Grain Whiskey matures intensively in red wine barriques. Sweet smoke, vanilla, caramel, and suede earned it gold at the 2022 San Francisco World Spirits Competition.
The Ondjaba Gravino Cask Finish was rounded off with further maturation in casks that previously contained Gravino, the house's port-like fortified wine. Upon removing the leather cork, you'll discover a rich fruity note alongside the characteristic spice and sweetness.
