Description

Located on Lake Biwa, Japan's largest lake, is the island nation's smallest whisky distillery. Founded in 2016, Nagahama is part of a new generation of Japanese distilleries – and a response to the growing demand for premium domestic products. In just 26 square meters, the team led by master blender Takashi Kiyoi distills the malty whisky spirit. The equipment is adapted to the space: Nagahama works with the smallest pot stills in Japan. The alembic stills ensure added fullness and depth.

The craft distillers also demonstrate their craftsmanship with two elegant single casks. The Nagahama 2018/2023 – Sake Cask was matured in a sake cask that previously contained Junmai Daiginjo sake. At 57.5% ABV, it blends vanilla and floral aromas with lingering fruit notes of Muscat grapes and pear. The Nagahama 2020/2023 – Mizunara Cask matured entirely in a rare Japanese Mizunara oak cask. The hardwood is difficult to work with, but imparts harmonious notes of oak, bread, and freshly brewed tea to the lightly peated single malt.
