Flavor notes

Nose: Refined, complex. A Grande Champagne Cognac is reminiscent of aromas of candied apricot, leaves and forest floor, which turn into cardamom and nutmeg. Exotic fruits such as mango and pomegranate are added with the same intensity as notes of precious wood.

Palate: Full-bodied, intense. Cane sugar, molasses and geranium take over the flavor palette. The middle palate is refreshed with impressive vitality by pressed oranges.

Finish: Long, full. With sugar cane, roasted notes such as coffee and spices such as ginger and cinnamon. Increasingly floral and vegetal (pipe tobacco), underlined by notes of walnut, hazelnut and almond.

Rare rum homage: Velier presents Last Ward by Mount Gay

Mount Gay is like its homeland of Barbados: a veteran of the rum world. According to the earliest written records, the distillery was founded on the Caribbean island in 1703. This makes it the oldest distillery in the world still in operation. In 1918, the Bajan Ward family became part of the success story when they left Mount Gay Estate. The Wards still own shares in the distillery today. The last member of the family to run the distillery was Frank Ward.

With the Last Ward Barbados 2007, Velier honors the long-standing family that owns the iconic distillery. The pure single rum is a cuvée of 13 barrels from the 2007 vintage, which is believed to still be owned by Frank Ward. Triple distilled in a pot still, the rum was filled into bourbon barrels and matured for 16 years in the prepared climate of Barbados. 70 percent went to the angels.

The power of rum is based on an ever-changing and wonderfully expressive palette of flavors and aromas – from cardamom and mango to geranium and freshly squeezed oranges to coffee and walnut.
