West Cork Bog Oak Charred Cask 0.7 l
West Cork Bog Oak Charred Cask , Single Malt Whiskey, 43% Vol.
The Glengarriff series consists of specially burnt barrels that acquire different aromas through the choice of fuel and later pass these on to the whiskey. This method is new and has never been used before by the West Cork Distillers. Specifically, a homemade burner is filled with fuel, fired up extremely hot with compressed air and the barrel is placed over it to create the layer of charcoal. As soon as the barrel has burned out, the oxygen supply is cut off and the fuel begins to smolder/smoke, thus releasing smoke and aromas into the barrel. The name of the series comes from the materials used, both of which come from the moors near Glengarriff. There are currently two new bottlings with the start of this series. One is the West Cork Peat Charred Cask and the other is the West Cork Bog Oak Charred Cask.
For the "Bog Oak Charred Cask", the barrels were charred with wood from old bog oaks instead of peat. These oaks are several hundred years old and were preserved in the bog in the absence of oxygen and in an acidic environment. Over time, the oaks became harder and extremely dark.
