Tasting Notes

Nose: A basket full of fruit and candy! Strong, fruity and fresh with banana, pear and white peach. Notes of sweetness invite you to enjoy. If you let it breathe, the nose becomes more complex, with honey and dried fruits such as raisins, dates and apricots. There is also a luscious hint of freshly baked bread and butter with woody undertones.

Palate: Intense ripe fruit and small, soft fruits such as wild strawberries or sour cherries. Towards the end, notes of milk chocolate ganache and toasted aromas add complexity.

Description

The Savanna distillery is located on the shores of the Indian Ocean, at the foot of the Piton de la Fournaise volcano. Rum has been produced by hand here since the 19th century, in the French overseas department and sugar cane paradise of La Réunion. However, the distillery and its exquisite bottlings as we know them today go back to Émile Hugot. Internationally known as "Monsieur Sucre", he led Savanna into the future from the 1950s onwards with extensive expertise on the subject of sugar.

The heart of Savanna is high-quality Rhum Agricole, Rhum traditionnel and Grand Arôme rum, which the distillery is one of the few in the world to produce. The full-bodied molasses rum ferments extensively and develops a high ester content, similar to typical Jamaican rum. Unusually for distilleries in the French overseas departments, Savanna processes both fresh sugar cane juice and molasses in column and pot stills - and only between July and November.

Free from any additives and not chill-filtered, Savanna rums reveal multifaceted, authentic aromas that testify to the wild beauty of the island.
In the case of Savanna 5 yo: elegant notes of exotic fruits, almonds and pastries. The distillery's liquid calling card matured in French oak cognac barrels, just like Savanna Le Must. The full-bodied, fruity blend of traditional and Grand Arôme rums matures for up to 9 years in tropical conditions - and was named Rum of the Year at Meininger's International Spirits Award ISW 2020.
