The Miltonduff distillery was built in 1824 by Andrew Peary and Robert Bain on the site of the brewery of the former Benedictine monastery of Pluscarden. Today there is no longer any connection between the distillery and the monastery, but the name of the monastery continues to appear on the labels of Gordon & MacPhail bottlings. The distillery was extensively renovated in the 1930s and 1970s.
The distillery has an annual capacity of around 5.2 million litres of alcohol and is now owned by Pernod Ricard. The whisky is an important component of Ballantine's Blends.
