It is located on the opposite bank of the Deveron from the town and is part of the Highland whisky region. The distillery was founded in 1962 by businessmen Brodie Hepburn, Marty Dykes and George Crawford. In 1972 it was taken over by William Lawson and in 1980 it was incorporated into the Martini Group, which has belonged to Bacardi since 1993. The water for production comes from the GellyBurn. The distillery started with two stills, a wash still and a spirit still. Over the years, the number of stills has been steadily increased, so that there are currently two wash stills and three spirit stills available. The distillery has a maximum production capacity of 2.8 million liters of pure alcohol. From the beginning, Macduff was open to changes and innovations in the production process. They were the first Scottish distillery to use metal mash tuns. They were also the first to heat their stills with steam. The production facility cannot be visited. Most of the production is used for the William Lawson's Blend.
