The dammed Burn of Linkwood, a tributary of the Lossie, supplies the cooling water for production. The facility consists of modern production facilities and the old warehouses. The distillery was founded in 1821 by Peter Brown. After his death, the distillery was taken over by his son, William Brown, and completely rebuilt in 1871. In 1897, the facility was expanded again. From 1897 to 1933, it operated under the name Linkwood-Glenlivet Distillery Co Ltd. and was then taken over by Scottish Malt Distillers Ltd. (SMD). The distillery was closed during the Second World War. In 1962, it was renovated and the stills were rebuilt and replaced. The company's own steam engine was also shut down and production was connected to the electrical network. In 1971, the distillery was expanded to include four stills by building a new stillhouse (Linkwood B). The old distillery (Linkwood A) was closed between 1985 and 1990. Today, Linkwood belongs to United Distillers & Vintners and is therefore part of the Diageo Group.
