The distillery is still quite young. It was built between 1972 and 1974 by the company International Distillers & Vintners Ltd (IDV) to produce malt whisky for their own blends. The quality of the product was so good that a 43% Singleton Particular was bottled for the Japanese market as early as 1978. In 1975 the distillery was taken over by Watney Mann and in the same year by Grand Metropolitan and is now part of Diageo. The water for production comes from Dorie's Spring. The malt is obtained from Pauls Malt in Carnoustie. The distillery has a mash tun (11.2 tons) made of stainless steel and eight fermentation tanks (51,000 l each). Distillation takes place in four wash stills (12,700 l each) and four spirit stills (7,900 l each), which are heated by steam from an oil-fired boiler. The annual capacity is 3.1 million liters of alcohol.
