Macbeth Whisky Collection performs second act
Alliances and collaborative efforts clash with ruthless ambition and fierce power struggles: The Scottish whisky industry is like Macbeth, Lexi Livingstone Burgess recognized, laying the foundation for the dramatic story of an impressive whisky collection. Together with Elixir Distillers, the founder of Livingstone and Burgess Studio, known for creative design work in Scotch, cast whiskies into the fantastical characters of Shakespeare's tragedy.
The Macbeth Collection consists of six series: The Leads (five majestic malts), The Thanes (twelve noble malts), The Ghosts (six "ghost distilleries"), The Witches (three malts and one blend), The Murderers (four island malts), and The Household (ten characterful whiskies). The 42 whiskies in each series will be released blended in five acts.
In the second act, the Bunnahabhain 45 yo (Lord Macduff) from the series The Leads takes center stage. The 100 bottles take the taste back to a time when Bunnahabhain produced notes of orchard fruits and barley sugar—maritime, but without smoke.
The Thanes are represented by three whiskies from bourbon casks. With floral and delicate fruit notes, the Glentauchers 27 yo (Lennox) is characterized by lightness – in stark contrast to the Ben Nevis 28 yo (Ross), an oily, fruit-forward single malt.
The Highland Park 18 yo (Young Siward) embodies the promising potential of its literary role model with heather and honey, but also honeysuckle and ginger.
For The Witches and The Murderers series, heavily peated malts were again chosen, such as the Unknown Islay 26 yo (Second Witch). Sourced from Islay's south coast, it complements medicinal notes with coal smoke, rich vanilla, and dark dried fruits. The distinctive peat smoke in the oily Isle of Jura 17 yo (Second Murderer) is tamed by sandalwood and herbal notes from Oloroso sherry hogsheads.
Matured entirely in first-fill bourbon barrels, the Clynelish 14 yo (Servant) lives up to its role as a servant of good taste, with butterscotch and the texture of candle wax enhanced by ginger and toasted vanilla. The Household is also represented by the Benrinnes 12 yo (Soldier), which brings massive power to its Shakespearean character, complemented by layers of currants and dried oregano.
