Exceptional Calvados from Springbank Casks:
Drouin combines apple and peat smoke

The Drouin house is an institution in the Calvados industry. The Norman brandy made from organic cider apples matures in a variety of different, mostly smaller oak barrels, with the oldest vintages dating back to 1939.

Away from tradition, the family business experiments with cask finishes in the Expérimental de Drouin series. For the fifth anniversary of the series, the house collaborated with perhaps the most iconic of all artisanal Scottish whiskies: Springbank. Drouin was able to rely on long-standing relationships with the distillery. Springbank has been sourcing Calvados casks from Normandy for 20 years to mature some of its whiskies.

The challenge of the new Springbank Angel: to combine the apple with the peaty notes of the Springbank Casks (10-12 ppm). The best choice for this was a 19-year-old Calvados Pays d'Auge with great depth. This was allowed to mature for five months in eight whisky casks - for a limited edition of 2,130 bottles. Eight Calvados casks from Drouin went to Springbank in exchange.

The result? An exceptional Calvados with power and charisma. Deep aromas of baked apples with smoky notes are followed by plum and cherry cake with slightly earthy accents. On the palate it is full-bodied, opulent, structured and characterized by roasted notes. The highlight of the aftertaste is the Springbank peat.
