Port Askaig Cask Strength with new batch
Port Askaig is the gateway to Islay. And a synonym for great whisky. With smoky notes, salty notes or a hint of seaweed, the brand of the same name captures the typical character of the island and its iconic whiskies. The independent bottlings from Elixir Distillers are real "mystery malts": which Islay distilleries the peaty drops come from is a secret.
Just like the 100 Proof, the Port Askaig Cask Strength from the Core Range has untamed Islay aromas in its luggage. The small batch, which is released annually, is bottled at cask strength from no more than 60 casks from a distillery on Islay's northeast coast. Port Askaig makes the cask composition transparent using a code.
Batch #02-2024 combines 62 percent sherry casks with refill butts and hogheads, as well as a small proportion of bourbon barrels, to create complex layers of dark sweetness, tangy fruit and warm spice that blend with rich Islay smoke.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Lemons and grilled sausages burst from the glass first. Then notes of espresso and light liquorice complement aromas of syrup and semi-sweet dark chocolate.
